File server
HiP has our own file serverโessentially a private computer that we can use to store files (movies, TV shows, music, etc.). We also use this computer to host this very webpage! The server provides a few services, which are listed below:
drive.hip.coop: HiP-wide file storage
The primary function of the file server is the HiP drive: a place for communally storing files. Think of it like a Free Pile but for digital files like movies, TV shows, and music!
If you're on HiP wifi, you can access the file server at http://drive.hip.coop. You will be prompted for a login; the username for the server is hippo, and the password is the same password as the wifi.
All shared content lives under the FreePile folder. There are subfolders for different types of media, including movies, music, TV shows, books, games, and uhโฆ โother adult content.โ The intent is that if you have downloaded music or movies, you can add it to this server so that everyone can enjoy it!
Note that this URL (http://drive.hip.coop) will only work if you're on HiP wifi!! These files are currently inaccessible outside of HiP.
If you would like to add the server to your computer so you can access and upload files directly, you can do so by following the following instructions (depending on your operating system/what kind of computer you have):
One last bonus of the HiP drive: we have our own version of Google Docs/Sheets/Slides installed too! You can create a new document using the Create button at the top of the screen.
plex.hip.coop: streaming movies and music
To make watching or listening to the media on our file server easier, we also have a Plex server, which you can access on HiP wifi at http://plex.hip.coop.
You can think of Plex as Netflix or Spotify at Home: it shows all of the movies and TV shows and music that have been uploaded to the HiP drive in a format similar to Netflix or Spotify. Additionally, you can download the Plex app on your phone (or tablet or smart TV or โฆ) and you'll be able to enjoy all this media on your own devices!
When you log in to Plex, you'll see three different libraries:
- Spotify at Home, which shows all music uploaded to the
Musicfolder inFreePile; - Movies, which shows all movies uploaded to the
Moviesfolder inFreePile; - and TV Shows, which shows all TV shows uploaded to the
TVfolder inFreePile.
If you want to add more media to the server, upload it to the HiP drive and it'll show up here!
